A Culinary Journey: Spotlight on Gerri McGarry at FoodSpace
Gerri McGarry’s story is one of passion, perseverance, and professional growth. Starting her journey as a deli assistant 22 years ago, her love for food quickly evolved into a thriving career. Today, she is a talented Chef de Partie at FoodSpace, where she brings creativity and dedication to every dish she prepares.
A Day in the Life
Gerri’s workday begins bright and early at 6 a.m., bustling with activity as she preps for the day ahead. From creating fresh salads daily to baking delicious tray bakes and preparing for hospitality menus, her mornings are a whirlwind of productivity.
“I love the energy of the kitchen,” Gerri says. Her role also includes managing HACCP sheets, stock checks, and ensuring smooth handovers for the evening chefs. The collaborative environment keeps her motivated. “If there’s no communication, the day can quickly unravel—we all have to pull together as a team.”
Inspired by Passion
For Gerri, culinary inspiration is rooted in her family values. “It’s part of my family moral,” she explains. She also thrives in FoodSpace’s zero-waste concept, which aligns with her belief in sustainability.
FoodSpace’s ethos of using the best ingredients and reducing waste resonates deeply with Gerri, and her enthusiasm for learning has been a foundation of her career. Through FoodSpace, she returned to college to pursue a degree in culinary. “I’ll be qualified with a Level 7 degree, in two years. I can go on to Level 8 and 9—it’s amazing to have that room for growth and education.”
Overcoming Challenges
Returning to education after 20 years was a daunting task, but Gerri faced the challenge head-on. “The opportunity to go back to college was life-changing. I wouldn’t have been able to do it on my own, but FoodSpace made it possible,” she shares. For Gerri, the experience reaffirmed her belief that knowledge is power.
Life Beyond the Kitchen
When Gerri isn’t crafting delicious meals, she’s busy staying active. Whether running, working out at the gym, or spending quality time with her teenagers, her life outside work is just as full and vibrant. “My kids love it when I make sweet treats like rocky roads. College has also helped me learn more about pastries, which they enjoy!”
Teamwork and Growth
For Gerri, the most valuable skills she’s gained at FoodSpace are teamwork and communication. “Working in a bigger team teaches you the importance of pulling together. Without effective communication, everything can fall apart.”
When asked what advice she would give to a new team member, Gerri highlights the importance of adaptability and a willingness to learn. “There’s plenty of room for growth here. If you’re open to learning and thrive in a fast-paced environment, you’ll do well.”
Achievements to Be Proud Of
Gerri’s greatest achievement so far has been her return to education. She beams with pride when talking about her studies and the support she’s received from the FoodSpace team. “It’s been an incredible journey, and I’m so grateful for the opportunity.”
Work Culture in Three Words
When describing FoodSpace’s work culture, Gerri chooses: Fun, Educational, and Hectic (in a good way).
Her personal motto captures her drive and enthusiasm:
“Knowledge is power.”
